Evan WeaverRecipient of the Harper Puziss Scholarship, awarded to a UCB student mostly on the basis of co-op involvement, then academic achievement, and finally on financial need.FROM: San Luis Obispo, CA CO-OP: Ridge House MEMBER SINCE: Fall 2005 MAJORS: Math and Physics Evan has lived at Ridge House for four years, and is sorely going to miss this home that has been so integral to his college experience. He is proud to have given back to the house through his longtime service as maintenance manager. He is particularly proud of the backyard patio he installed, which is frequently used for house BBQs. On top of being a leader in his house, Evan has spent four years as a devoted member to the UC Berkeley chapter of the Objectionist Club. During his involvement, his chapter has emerged as one of the most prominent in the country. Evan is currently spending his final semester focusing on research and exploring internship options. He hopes to continue on a career path that helps him better understand the world and all of its processes.
Evan says that living in the co-ops has been one of the most positive experiences in his life. The co-ops have helped him understand other people’s perspectives, and develop friendships with international students from all over the world. Serving as a manager for three years has taught Evan how much he enjoys organizing and leading. Evan loves his co-op because his “closest friends and family are right down the hall. [He has] met the most amazing people here that [he knows he] wouldn’t have otherwise.” Carolyn BrownRecipient of the Judy Gilmore Scholarship, awarded to a woman residing in Hoyt on the basis of financial need and academic excellence.FROM: San Mateo, CA CO-OP: Hoyt MEMBER SINCE: Fall 2007 MAJOR: Public Health Carolyn balances her commitment to her academic career with her public health work in the greater community. She has served as health worker for Hoyt for the last year, as an intern for a clinical trial at UCSF last fall, and currently serves as the Emergency Services Coordinator for the Co-op. Despite all of these commitments, she will graduate this spring after only three years of college. Upon graduation, Carolyn hopes to work for a non-profit organization that focuses on increasing preventative health efforts and in equalizing healthcare. Her long-term goals include getting a Masters in Public Health, traveling the world, and becoming increasingly sustainable in her daily life. Living in a co-op has increased Carolyn’s appreciation of community efforts. She respects how every member chips in to make everything run smoothly, and that without the efforts of each member, the house would not function as well as it does. This makes her conscious and appreciative of everybody’s efforts, from the floor sweeper to the house president. Carolyn finds Hoyt “the ideal college living situation - a quiet place to get work done, plus a friendly social community to talk, dance, bake, or engage in any of the other diverse interests of the 59 other members living there.” |
