Planned GivingThe BSC is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that offers planned giving opportunities to alumni and friends. The BSC is now working on expanding cooperative living while performing major renovations to improve all buildings, including upgrading seismic safety, expanding disabled accessibility and improving environmental sustainability. Alumni have also contributed towards creating a sizeable scholarship fund. Outright GiftsAppreciated SecuritiesGifts of securities are recorded based on the mean market value of the stock, bond or mutual fund on the date of gift, which is determined by the date the donor relinquishes control of the security. Donors should contact the BSC to coordinate securities transfers. Gifts of such property avoids the capital gains tax while also allowing a charitable deduction for the full fair market value for property held over one year. Real PropertyMake a substantial gift to the BSC through a transfer of residential, commercial, or undeveloped real estate. If you transfer the property subject to a life estate, you can continue to live in the property while you pay for taxes, insurance, and maintenance. Personal PropertyDonate books, artwork, or equipment and secure an income tax deduction. Estate GiftsBequestProvide for a future gift to the BSC by including a bequest in your will, living trust, or testamentary trust. Charitable Lead TrustCreate a trust that makes annual payments to the BSC for a specified period. When the trust terminates, the remaining principle is paid to your heirs. Retirement PlanName the BSC as a beneficiary on your IRA, 401(k), or other qualified plan. Life Insurance PoliciesNew PolicyMake the gift by taking out a new policy on your life, naming the BSC the irrevocable owner as well as beneficiary (this arrangement makes the gift complete in the eyes of the IRS.) We will receive the premium notices, and you will make annual donations to offset our payments. These gifts will be tax-deductible. There is no deduction for setting up the policy itself. Paid-Up PolicyGive a life insurance policy your family no longer needs by naming the BSC the irrevocable owner and beneficiary of a paid-up insurance policy on your life (this arrangement makes the gift complete in the eyes of the IRS). You will receive an immediate charitable deduction for your gift. It will be the lesser of the policy's fair market value or the total of your net premium payments. We reserve the right to keep a donated insurance policy in force during your lifetime, or to terminate it sooner for its cash-surrender value. Other Planned Giving ArrangementsWe would be happy to discuss other arrangements with you and your financial advisor, although at this time the BSC does not have the organizational capacity to act as trustee or to administer charitable gift annuities.
