The Co-op Apartments

The BSC owns and operates 3 apartment complexes: Rochdale, Fenwick and Northside.  All rooms in the apartments are single occupancy.

Northside is not available to members in their first year of co-op living.

The Rochdale and Fenwick apartments can only house UC Berkeley students during Fall and Spring. We have very few apartment spaces available for new members, and those who do get assigned usually have priority on the waiting list. After one semester in the co-ops, it is highly probable that a member can transfer to a single room in a two, three, or four bedroom apartment. Normally it takes several semesters in the co-ops to have enough seniority to get a studio or one-bedroom apartment.

Furnishings

Each resident is guaranteed a bed, desk, dresser, and chair.  Each apartment has a kitchen, bathroom, and a living/dining area. All kitchens include a refrigerator, a stove and cabinet space. The apartment common rooms are unfurnished, but often furniture is left by former occupants.

Workshifts

We keep our costs low because members help with the upkeep of the common areas. Everything that needs to get done is divided into “workshifts”. During the academic year, every apartment residents are expected to complete between 6 and 12 hours of workshift each semester. Examples of apartment workshifts are: weeding the garden and landscaping, recycling, and common area clean up.
